About Us

Field Up Productions LLC (also known as "Field Up" or "Field") began in 2004 by Dawn McGhee and Rita Acoli as an independently owned film company whose goal is to produce eyebrow raising documentary films, along with marketable merchandise.

In its incubate state, the company acquired the ownership rights of one dynamic person, whose life has been the talk of the community for over 30 years. After obtaining the rights, work began scripting and following the guidelines of pre-production to develop the screenplay. Soon after, Field Up added to its consulting staff, a team of individuals with over 40 years experience in the film industry collectively and whose credits stretch as far as Academy Award® nominee, NAACP Image Award Recipient, Tony Award Recipient and many more. Since then, Field Up has moved its projects from the process of development and pre-production into a full throttle production.

Our mission is produce thought provoking educational works, which quenches the consumer's thirst and need for great documentary cinema. Our niche is a specialized market that provides autobiographical documentaries of freedom figthers uncommonly spoken and high-end dramatic features within the pre and post Civil Rights Movement era. Our features are intriguing. We have acquired the rights of several activists known both nationally and internationally; whose life story has a demand to be heard and seen by the public.

Dawn McGhee is the visionary behind Field Up. She has taken her knowledge coupled with her film education to propel a small mini-doc into a full series. McGhee compares the FIST Series to those films gaining more widespread audiences such as BET's American Gangster, MSNBC's Manson, or PBS' Eyes on the Prize. She anticipates the audience will be glued to the network upon release.

About Dawn McGhee

When she’s not in the recording studio, acting, producing music, or directing films, Dawn McGhee plays an even bigger role. She’s mother, daughter, friend, activist and writer. Reared in Dallas, Texas, the youngest of 14 grandchildren; by age three, Dawn had appeared in local commercials. Being the daughter of southern pioneer actor, Bill McGhee, she was  motivated to participate in social activities including drama, dance, voice, sports and writing.

She
received a creative writing scholarship for college and was faced with many challenges. “When I was young, I felt pressure of having to succeed in two worlds. My mother was a counselor and civil rights activist. My father was a business owner and actor who opened the doors for Black actors in the metroplex to perform on stage. Their accomplishments pushed me to graduating college early, earning a Master’s degree by age 22, and participate in political and community affairs, in addition to learning the arts. My varied background made me strong and is the reason I wear so many hats today.” By hats, Dawn consults indie companies, produces music and films, and used to perform as a rapper and poet. She has also appeared in independent film releases.

While obtaining her Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Houston, McGhee studied Drama. Her interests in show business went beyond acting. She had a strong interest in directing and set design. McGhee doesn’t mind picking up a brush and hammer to create props, or taking a director his afternoon snack as production assistant. In the early '90s, Dawn  was coined “the local hotshot” in VIBE Magazine. She tantalized her audience when she performed under the moniker, Rysque. While those hats were many, she took time to offer journal therapy to social prisoners. “It hit home when some of my peers were going to prison. In the entertainment industry, this seems to be the norm. I’d write them in an effort to bring hope. I did not want them to be discouraged. At first, it was encouraging words. It later developed into journal therapy. The good news travelled from one facility to the next. I found myself helping other social prisoners with books of interest and journaling thoughts, desires, and being honest with one self. It’s therapy for me too. It keeps me grounded.”

Today, McGhee’s film career is on the rise. Her dedication to bringing audiences thought provoking productions has proven she is ready to mark her territory. More of Dawn McGhee's biography can found on www.dawnmcghee.net
